An 1871 Buffalo Hunt and a Calf

by Clifford Matter

An Early Story told by D. J. Matter
Wrote up years latter by Clifford Matter

In October 1871 a party was organized for a buffalo hunt to secure a supply of meat for the coming winter. In the party were D. J. Matter, S. S. Sills, C. E. Plowman and S. A. Worick. The herd was located about due west of Jewell on Oak Creek in Smith County. The kill was made and a good supply of meat processed into buffalo jerk.

They broke camp in the morning and started home. After about three miles they came upon a stray buffalo calf about four months old. The calf did not run but seemed curious and watched them. The men stopped their wagons and S. R. Worwick suggested they catch the calf and take it home. Three men worked around ahead of the calf to hold its attention while SR got a picket rope from a wagon to use for a lariat. He then slipped around behind in the blue stein and neatly tossed it over the calf's head. The calf fairly explored and put up a terrific fight. At last it lay back on the rope with its eyes bugged tongue out and out of breath. SR thinking the calf was subdued worked down the rope but this was not the case. The calf swapped ends and with both back feet kicked him in a rather touchy spot. This act of unkindness on the calf' part greatly infuriated SR. He pulled his hunting knife from his belt and made a swing at the calf with the dire intention of cutting its throat. The knife missed its mark but it did neatly sever the rope. One man held a knife and three men held the rope and watched the calf streak across the prairie.
